MLS – Week 20

Who: (2nd) DC United (9-5-8) at (3rd) Atlanta United (10-8-3)
When: July 21st, 2019 at 4:00 PM ET
Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

MATCHUP:

Atlanta United had one of those matches that took you back into last season and you saw just goal, goals, and more goals. After the red card happened early in the 6th minute you could only see it ending one way, and it was fun to watch. Nagbe opened the scoring by scoring his first Atlanta United goal followed up with a Brandon Vazquez goal. Then the King put it away for good by soring a brace and Julian Gressel came with his own closeline from hell with a goal in the 88th minute where all I could hear Jim Ross yelling “By God, Count Faster! Put Them out of Their Misery!” and it was nice to see for a change. This game marked a historic moment for Josef where he officially scored against every team in the MLS.

DC United is coming off their own strong 4-1 win against FC Cincinnati. They controlled much of the match Rodriguez had a brace and contributing goals from Rooney and Arriola to seal it.

Atlanta United and DC United are in the top 3 of the eastern conference and really neither team has really shown their full ability. Each team has shown moments and small stretches of dominance but not long enough like you see in our squad last season and even LAFC this is season. Depending on the result in Philadelphia Unions match the winner between United and DC could end up the no.1 team in the Eastern Conference.

DC United sit in 2nd place and that is only a 2 point lead over Atlanta.

HISTORY:

All-Time Series: 2-3-0 (regular season)
At Atlanta: 2-2-0

In 2017 DC United took the season series winning both matchups 3-1 & 2-1 respectively. In 2018 Atlanta won both matches 3-1 on both occasions. March 3rd in this seasons season opener DC took it to Atlanta winning 2-0 with Arriola and Luciano Acosta on the scoresheet.

OPINION: I expect Atlanta to win first and foremost. The team will need to stay solid and patient against this DC United side. In this match Luciano Acosta returns from his 2 match suspension. In Atlanta’s last 5 matches has been bang average with 2 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. The shining light maintains Josef who has 6 goals in his last 6 league matches. With 11 goals coming in his last 9 matches.
