Atlanta United have signed Guinean national team defender Florentin Pogba on a reported one year deal. Initially reported by GetFrenchFootballNews.com, the signing was confirmed today by Florentin’s younger brother, Manchester United and France megastar Paul Pogba. The 28 year old center back joins as a free agent having last played for Turkish club Gençlerbirliği. Florentin has been without a club since the expiry of his contract with Gençlerbirliği this past summer, although he recently trialed with and was offered a contract by Elche, who play in the second division in Spain.
At this time, it would seem unlikely that Pogba would displace either of Michael Parkhurst or Leandro González Pírez on the depth chart for first choice center-back, but United will certainly require depth in all positions on the pitch if they are to be successful in their upcoming CONCACAF Champions League campaign in addition to their efforts to defend their MLS Cup title. Assuming Franco Escobar continues to play as a right-back, Pogba becomes just the fourth center-back in the senior team for Atlanta United alongside the aforementioned starting pair and Miles Robinson.
